The global smart street lighting market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 28.21% during the forecast period. Based on connectivity, the global smart street lighting market has been segmented into wired and wireless.

Programmable logic controller (PLC) is a communication module used for the wired smart street light. It is one of the most secure communication modules and is better than a wireless communication module such as Bluetooth. The upfront cost of PLC based wired smart street light is higher than that of smart street light systems that work on a wireless communication module. It is less flexible due to hardwiring, and communication is possible only if the power lines are installed.

In April 2016, Echelon Corp. (Echelon), part of Adesto Technologies, developed an outdoor lighting control known as Lumewave Powerline-RF Gateway. The gateway integrates power lines and wireless communication modules for smart street lighting. In 2016, the company installed 3,615 street lights in Bellingham (Washington) based on this technology. It installed wired connected (smart) street lights in various cities. Hence, the wired segment of the global smart street lighting market is expected to grow considerably during the forecast period.
